Welcome! My name is April Bernier and I am a science teacher at Johnston County Early College Academy. I grew up in Rhode Island and earned my Bachelor of Arts in Biological Sciences from Smith College in 2006. I taught for six years in Rhode Island before moving to North Carolina in 2015. I teach Honors Biology, Earth and Environmental Science, and Pride Time.
My approach to teaching is student-centered, open-ended, and focused on critical thinking and creativity. It is important to me that my students learn not only science facts, but also how to think like scientists. For this reason, I focus each unit around a project that requires students to think outside the box, design solutions to problems, test ideas, make connections, research, collaborate, and communicate. I also work hard to make sure students understand the real world applications of each topic we study.
When I'm not teaching, I enjoy reading, biking, woodworking, and spending time with my family.
